Lose Weight With Low Impact Exercise

Healthy eating habits and physical activity are key to losing weight and staying healthy. Unfortunately, the image of regular exercise often leads us to believe we’re headed for boot camp rather than the gym. If you are unable to do rigorous exercise due to injury or other circumstances, you should not give up. Alternatives do exist.

On television we are bombarded by people who are extremely overweight. They go through intense exercise routines to get in shape. Yes, this approach can work, but it requires a commitment of time, emotions, and spirit that most of us cannot maintain on our own. Another thing to remember about these television shows is that they are written entirely for their entertainment value. This means that they are written and produced to push the contestants to the edge.

The stress and strain you see contestants got through on these shows is not the only way to lose weight. There are good, low impact exercises that will slowly help you get back into shape – and it’s a lot healthier for you too.

Try Walking

One of the healthiest ways to get your body in shape is to take a walk. Walking invigorates every muscle in your body. They only thing that you need is a good pair of sneakers. You don’t need to spend a fortune. Choose the style that fits well and cushions your feet.

If the weather cooperates, take a walk in your neighborhood. If you are lucky enough to live near a nice park, take advantage of the location and go for a stroll. Try to find a friend or relative to go with you. It makes the trek more enjoyable. Having someone to talk to along the way makes the time go by in a flash. Suddenly you will have covered two miles and it won’t feel like exercise. If it is too cold or stormy to walk outside, go to your local indoor shopping mall. Don’t window shop; just walk up and down the main concourse to get your legs moving.

Yoga Works Magic

Yoga is a lot more intense than it looks. All that bending and stretching really works your body, albeit in a low impact way. As you get more advanced, the workouts can become quite intense. Join a class, or buy a DVD to practice at home.

Be Mindful of Your Food Intake

Exercise alone will not help you lose weight, and unless you watch what you eat, you may end up putting on weight. Stick to healthy foods and minimize the sugary, fatty foods. You don’t have to forgo your favorite cookies, just learn to eat one every now and then, not a bag a day. Watch your portions, and don’t eat when you’re not hungry.
