Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Leads to Mental Health Issues and Depression, an Enabling Wife, and Encouragement for Constructive Change and Successful Alcohol Addiction Counseling
It took more than a few years but Emily at long last made up her mind that she had it with her husband’s careless and hazardous drinking. She was weary from seeing Barry come home after 1:00 AM from drinking rather than spending time with her and the kids. She was also worn-out from the second DUI Barry recently received. Furthermore she was drained from generating explanations for Barry when he couldn’t show up for work due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was concerned and depressed about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Barry’s abusive and careless drinking. And lastly she was sick and tired of the uncertain financial mess into which he had put his family due to his abusive and excessive drinking behavior.
When Irresponsible and Abusive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Beneficial About a Person’s Drinking Problem
One Thursday afternoon when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s unhealthy and excessive drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something helpful to cut into the damaging cycle of Barry’s unhealthy drinking behavior.
So she looked on the Internet under “alcohol rehab” and located quite a few treatment clinics that were all located less than 50 miles away from where Barry and she lived.
Due to the fact that she didn’t know too much about these treatment facilities, she finally made up her mind that she needed to call some of them and ask some important questions. When she called each rehab center she introduced herself and stated that Barry, her husband, was engaging in abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her husband had a quality health insurance program at his job and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol addiction rehabilitation would be covered if a doctor in the company health network suggested the rehabilitation.
At one rehabilitation center, Emily was stunned that she was able to converse directly with a counselor who asked her to come to the rehab clinic to talk about her husband’s careless drinking behavior in more detail.
Emily Talks to a Counselor About Her Husband’s Harmful Drinking
When Emily arrived at the rehabilitation facility, she filled out some forms and then after approximately five or ten minutes got to see a physician.
After listening to Emily discuss her husband’s negative drinking, the doctor in an encouraging but resolute manner explained to Emily how she probably played a major part in her husband’s abusive and careless drinking through the months and the years by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than allowing him to go through the results of his abusive and excessive drinking behavior.
Emily Discovers She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Hazardous and Irresponsible Drinking
Stated in a slightly different way, the healthcare practitioner told Emily that she may have been inadvertently enabling Barry’s excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior. The therapist also underlined the fact that while Emily would not be able to control her spouse’s actions, with the encouragement and support of the treatment team at the treatment facility she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s unhealthy drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could discuss his harmful drinking behavior with a counselor.
The good news was that after Emily explained this to her husband, and he saw that she was serious, Barry told her that he had been extremely nervous regarding his negative drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to learn that Emily wanted to do something productive about his unhealthy drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a healthcare professional at the local alcohol rehab facility.
Barry Agrees to See a Healthcare Professional About His Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking
While simply calling a treatment facility does not guarantee that a person’s abusive and careless drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one manifests will simply vanish, making an appointment is evidently an indispensable component in the rehabilitation process. And due to the fact that Barry was serious about getting help for his excessive and abusive drinking, the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly augmented.
